  • This torch song is the signature tune for the 1981 Broadway musical, Dreamgirls, in which Effie White, a singer with the girl group The Dreams, proclaims to her manager, Curtis Taylor Jr., that she loves him.
  • Jennifer Holliday, who played Effie in the original 1981 Broadway production, recorded the original and definitive version of this song. Released as a single, it peaked at #22 in the US and #32 in the UK.
  • Jennifer Hudson played Effie in the 2006 film version of Dreamgirls, winning an Oscar for her role and her version peaked at #60 in the Hot 100. The song hovered in the lower reaches of the UK singles chart three years later after a succession of performances on UK reality shows before peaking at the same chart position as Holliday's version.
  • A dance version by Donna Giles reached #29 in the UK in February 1996.
