Songfacts®:

  • "I'll Fight" serves as the official anthem for RBG, a documentary bio about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The song is sung by Jennifer Hudson, whom the song's writer Diane Warren described as being like RBG's "voice avatar."
  • Diane Warren told Billboard that though her songwriting process is the same whether writing for a real or fictional character, in this instance she wanted to create something that was in Ruth Bader Ginsberg's voice. So she wrote it imagining "how her mom always taught her to speak softly and yet she speaks so loud. Everything she does, her voice carries, so I wanted to write a song that could talk about that because she's been fighting for us forever."
  • Diane Warren landed an Oscar nod for this song but lost out to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow." It was Warren's 10th Academy Award nomination, but each time she's returned home empty handed.
