Songfacts®:

  • Jennifer Nettles sings here about closing the door on a past relationship. "Who can't relate to a good breakup song?" said the singer. "The fun part is that there are all kinds of breakup songs. You could be Adele, and you could be heartbroken and down. Or you could be 'Hey Heartbreak,' that is super fun and triumphant and almost like an anthem for freedom. You're really moving past the sadness and healing."
  • The song was penned by Sara Haze, Shane McAnally and Jimmy Robbins. It is one of only two songs on Playing With Fire on which Nettles does not have co-writing credits.
  • The video was directed by Shane Drake and shot along the California coast. We see Nettles experiencing a time of happiness after a broken relationship during a solo vacation at the beach.

"The whole idea here is that she is letting go of a heartbreak," explained Drake. "She's letting go of all the things that make you feel down - make you feel constricted. We decided to take positive approach towards ourselves, where Jennifer can have Santa Barbara to recharge and re-energize."
