Songfacts®:

  • This finds Lewis recalling her involvement with a man in her younger days when they were wearing peace signs in "the daisy age."
  • The title was changed by producer Ryan Adams from the original "Love Him Forever." Lewis recalled to Billboard magazine: "It was originally 'Love Him Forever,' but I made a mistake while recording it and sang, 'Love you forever.' Ryan said, 'That's the song!'"
  • Jenny Lewis sings:

We were kids then in the Daisy Age
And we wore peace signs as the riots blazed.

The lyric is a reference to the LA riots of 1992, when the city erupted after four white cops were acquitted in the beating of black motorist Rodney King. "I was 15 when the LA riots happened," she recalled to Paste magazine, "and my friends were middle-class kids from the west side of Los Angeles. They were graffiti artists, bad kids for the most part. And they looted the Gap on Melrose. We were watching this s--t happen on the news, and these middle-class kids were looting in West Hollywood!"
