Songfacts®:

  • This is the titular and closing track of Lewis' The Voyager album. The record was produced by Ryan Adams, who Lewis told Spin was a no-nonsense kind of guy. "I was so afraid of myself as an artist," she explained. "I had forgotten how to do the thing that I love doing. And [Adams] agitated me just enough to get a performance out of me. I let him into my songs, and I let him rearrange parts… I was totally open because I was desperate."
  • Lewis sings here of a cosmic exploration accompanied just by a folk guitar. She uses the Voyager space probes that were launched to explore Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune as a metaphor for her travels. The songstress recalled to American Songwriter how Adams pushed her into penning this tune. "One day Ryan told me to go home and write 'Wonderwall' and I was like, 'What? I can't do that, that's a perfect song,'" Lewis recalled. "So I went home and was totally panicking and wracking my brain, and for whatever reason 'The Voyager' came out of that assignment – not that it's at all like 'Wonderwall.' In other words, he inspired me to write another song for the record and not many producers can do that."
