Songfacts®:

  • Written by Jess Glynne with Ed Sheeran, this ode to simply being yourself finds the singer doing her own thing on Thursdays.

I won't wear makeup on Thursday
'Cause who I am is enough

It seems that Thursday is Glynne's dressing-down day. It's also when she wears her sweatpants and drinks "soft drink from a can."
  • Glynne told BBC Radio 2 breakfast show host Chris Evans that she penned the song with Ed Sheeran during a sort of musical "therapy session." She added: "The song itself is about accepting yourself for who you are and not abiding by society and feeling like you have to abide by the pressures that people put on you - to wear make up and be perfect at all time. Being you is just fine... Who I am is enough."
  • The song was naturally released on a Thursday – the day before Glynne's sophomore album Always In Between dropped on October 12, 2018.
  • While Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday frequently crop up in song names the other days of the week are much more rare. The only other songs we have on our database with "Thursday" in the title are:

"Thursday" by The Pet Shop Boys

    "Thursday's Child" by David Bowie.
  • Jessie Glynne had previously collaborated with Steve Mac on her track "Take Me Home." When she arranged another session with the songwriter/producer, he mentioned that Ed Sheeran was around and would like to come too.

When the trio got together they started off with a meal and then conversed for hours about life. "We spoke about the highs and lows of being famous and doing the job that we do," Glynne told Billboard.

The songstress was comforted to find that Sheeran suffers from the same insecurities as she does, and they wrote this song around that topic. Glynne explained that being in the spotlight, she feels like she is constantly being judged. "If you're not smiling and in the best mood or looking amazing, someone's gonna make a comment," she said. "Social media can be the devil sometimes and can make you judge yourself, and not for the right reasons."
