Songfacts®:

  • This track finds Simpson asking her new love interest to stop doing the household chores and not worry about his appearance, just come on over.
  • Simpson said in her publicity materials that this song is all about the excitement of a new crush. She explained: "It's about that feeling you get when just can't wait to see the person you're crushing on. You feel like you're going to burst if you can't see them right then and there."

At the time, Simpson - a Texan - was dating Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, so perhaps that's who she had in mind.
  • "Come On Over" was a country turn for Simpson, who to this point was making pop music. She did put on cowboy boots three years earlier when she played Daisy Duke in the movie version of The Dukes of Hazzard, and she released a countryfied version of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" for the film but it didn't make the Country chart.

It seemed like country fans might reject Simpson, but "Come On Over" successfully entered at #41 on Billboard's Country chart, the highest debut for a Country music newcomer (the song peaked at #18). The previous record belonged to Miranda Lambert ("Me and Charlie Talking") and Brad Cotter ("I Meant To"), both debut country singles, which entered the chart at #42.
  • Jessica Simpson on hearing her song on country radio for the first time: "I got chills and butterflies in my stomach. It felt like the first time I heard myself on the radio when I was 19. Country is where my heart is. It's refreshing to share something that feels so close to home. I am so honored to become a part of the country community."
  • Simpson together with Rachel Proctor and Victoria Banks wrote this song. Rachel Proctor previously co-wrote Martina McBride's 2002 single "Where Would You Be" and has recorded several hits of her own including the Top 20 single "Me and Emily." Victoria Banks is best known for penning the Sara Evans hit song "Saints & Angels," for which she won a 2003 ASCAP Country Music Award.
