Songfacts®:

  • Jessie wrote this song after childhood sweetheart Sam Burrows proposed to her on the Greek island of Skopelos. She explained to The Guardian: "(It) is me celebrating the memory of the fact that he's proposed to me and that we'll be together for ever."
  • The song finds Jessie singing about her frustration regarding Sam's delay in proposing. "We waited such a long time, we've been going out forever," she said. "I wanted it to be this motorbike riding song, lots of yearning on an open highway."
  • Ware co-penned the song Los Angeles neo-soul singer-songwriter Miguel, with whom she also collaborated on another Tough Love track "Kind of…Sometimes…Maybe." She'd previously contributed vocals towards a remix of Miguel's hit single, "Adorn."
  • Jessie Ware: "I wanted it to have a driving feel to it, probably because we were in LA and you are always in the car here. I wanted it to feel optimistic, I think that was also the LA sun helping with that."
  • The song's music video begins with the message: "For me, 'You & I (Forever)' is celebrating the person you love being by your side. This is what it means to others..." We then see Ware and her husband Sam Burrows, along with a bunch of the singer's fans, friends and family visit a London photo booth plus the song's co-writer, Miguel.

The video's director, Adam Powell used grainy footage to give it a vintage look. Powell frequently shoots his videos without a full range of colors. Both Example's "Changed the Way You Kiss Me" and Birdy's "People Help the People" were shot in black and white.
