Songfacts®:

  • This song was produced by The Fisticuffs, the duo that was also responsible for Aiko's 2013 song "The Worst" from her Sail Out EP, as well as her 2017 single "Maniac." They helmed eight tracks in total on Trip.
  • Sativa marijuana is one of the two major types of cannabis plants, (Indica being the other). It was The Fisticuffs that came up with this track's title. Aiko told NPR:

"They know sativa is my favorite. They named the track 'Sativa,' so I knew no matter what I talked about on this song I wanted to keep the name, because it definitely feels like sativa."
  • The track features sultry vocals from Rae Sremmurd's Swae Lee. Aiko explained: "I had this melody for almost two years now and I just couldn't put it into words. Everyone, even No I.D., was like, 'Why don't you just put it on your album like that, so people can just feel what you're saying.' Then, at the very last minute, Amaire, who produces on the album, said, 'We should call Swae Lee.' And I'm a fan. So we had a session, he came through and he came through. That inspired me and I came up with new verses."
  • "Sativa" was released as the second single from Trip on January 22, 2018. The single version is a remixed version featuring an additional verse from Swae Lee's Rae Sremmurd partner Slim Jxmmi.
