Songfacts®:

  • "Steeple" reflects the spiritual journey of Jim Sonefeld, drummer for Hootie & the Blowfish. He started releasing Christian music in 2012.

Sonefeld told Songfacts the story: "Inspired by a church steeple I saw rising through the tall trees in a neighborhood where I live, I wrote the lyrics lightly based on my own experience of re-entering the church as an adult. After getting sober in 2005 I tiptoed my way into a few churches in South Carolina to see how it felt, compared to the experience I had with church as a child. I had ceased formal church participation when I left home at age 18.

My return to a church setting became more focused on the lessons and life of Jesus Christ, as opposed to the rituals and formal traditions I'd practiced as a child. I began to see the importance of following Jesus, and the actions it required, not just in believing in him."
  • The song was recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville, Tennessee. Regarding the instrumentation, Sonefeld says: "The drumming on this song is one of my favorites, played by Greg Morrow. He knocks it out of the park with the raucous energy I've always been inspired by in my favorite drummers.

Pat Buchanan is featured on slide guitar and absolutely tears it up during the solo. Pat also played on my bandmate Darius Rucker's album Southern Style.
