Songfacts®:

  • The Odlukek album benefited from a little help from Jimi Goodwin's friend, Elbow frontman Guy Garvey. "Guy's a mate, we've always talked about writing together," he told Q magazine. "He co-wrote 'Panic Tree,' which is about how mad both of our fathers were."
  • The track was inspired by Washington Phillips' gospel song "Lift Him Up, That's All." Goodwin told Under The Radar magazine: "Guy Garvey and I vowed that whenever we finally got a chance to collaborate, this idea would be the jumping-off point. It was."
  • Goodwin's now-deceased father suffered from bipolar disorder and their relationship were never completely rosy. He told The Independent: "Guy doesn't come from a conventional family – I mean, who does? – and I never knew where I was with my dad. I found that really touching, that [Guy] had grasped that from our conversations."
