Songfacts®:

  • Selected as the B-side of "The Wind Cries Mary," the lyrics are at least semi-autobiographical, as Hendrix sings about a guy with "flaming hair" and a "guitar slung across his back."
  • This track is available only in the mono version, as Hendrix producer Chas Chandler's liked it better than the stereo mix. >>>
    Suggestion credit:
    Bertrand - Paris, France
  • The phrase "a rolling stone gathers no moss" inspired "Rollin' Stone" by Muddy Waters and "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan, but Hendrix used the full proverb in this song:

    And everybody knows boss
A rolling stone gathers no moss

Rolling Stone magazine was launched later in 1967.

  • Rc from Montpelier, VtLike A Rolling Stone came out 2 years before this, so if anything Hendrix was inspired by that, not the other way around.
  • Kevin from Los Angeles, Ca....a stereo version is on the Jimi Hendrix Experience box set...I think Chas was right in this case.
