Songfacts®:

  • The downside to Jimmy Buffett's musical lifestyle is the time he has to spend away from his family. He wrote this song for his future wife, Jane, who he was missing while on tour. When he sings the first line, "Headed out to San Francisco for the Labor Day weekend show," he's talking about a specific concert in 1973.
  • The single version of the song replaces the third line, "I've got my Hush Puppies on," with "I've got my hiking shoes on." Some broadcast outlets, including the BBC, would not play songs with brand names in the lyrics, something that forced an edit on the Kinks song "Lola."
  • One of Buffett's more popular songs, this is one of "The Big 8" that he played at almost all of his concerts. >>>

  • A bit of irony in this song is that Buffett is looking forward to Monday so he can be with the one he loves, but for most of his audience, Monday is the dreaded day when the weekend ends and they have to go back to work.
  • Until "Margaritaville" came along a few years later and peaked at #8, this was Buffett's highest-charting entry on the Hot 100.
  • Jane Slagsvol, a model and University of South Carolina student, was on spring break in Key West when she met Buffett in a phone booth outside of the Chart Room Bar in 1972. The following year, a smitten Buffett wrote the song about her and, in 1977, they got married. Jane also starred in the music video, which features the couple on a picnic outing.
  • Buffett didn't have a budget for the video so Jane went without pay and he used his real truck (which was later impounded and crushed at a junk yard) and boat in the clip. "There wasn't really much need in scripting this," he said of the video. "This was where I lived, the people I lived with, and the girl who I wrote 'Come Monday' about."

  • Alan from AustraliaI always wondered if it was "a brown ale-y haze" :-D
  • Richard Gallagher from Madison, CtBuffet passed exactly 50yrs after he composed the lyrics for this song.
  • ArvonHe recorded a version of this song where “I’ve got my Hush Puppies on” is replaced by “I’ve got my hiking boots on”. Makes a connection with the later line “…we could go hiking on Tuesday…”.
  • AnonymousWhen he says we can go hiking on Tuesday he met Jane in Aspen after he did the Labor Day weekend shows in San Francisco(actually in San Anselmo).
  • Key West Bob from Key WestAlways enjoyed Jimmy's music
  • AnonymousSongfact: Labor Day is Monday. The video appears to be filmed in the Santa Barbara area, you can tell by the off shore oil derricks.
  • Bob from UsaIsn't it ironic he's talking about going to San Francisco and also spending 4 lonely days in a brown L.A. Haze?
  • John from Virginia Beach, VaThe thing that's great about Jimmy Buffett is that he's an everyman. What I mean by this is that he's the type of guy who'll play a concert and then have drinks with the audience after the show which he is known to do when he gives concerts in his homeland of Key West, Florida. His songs are all relatable because the topics are all something that the majority who listen to them have, at one time or another, thought about themselves. Come Monday is a perfect example of this.
  • Chuck from South Deerfield, Ma, MaI think in the song he has already lost her.
  • Joel R. from Oakland, Calove this song
  • Bob from Bismarck, NdI've sang this song, Karaoke version many times. It's surprising, how many people tell me later that they enjoy the song. I think it's a great song and it's easy to sing.
  • Mike from Seattle, WaI went about 30 years thinking it was a "brown Nelly haze"- the "Labor Day Weekend Show" being a rodeo that Jimmy was performing at. I partially blame NCAA football announcer Kieth Whoooaa Nelly!!! Jackson.
  • Bill from Pensacola, FlSTEEL GUITAR.
just listen for it, it's beautiful.
  • Heather from Los Angeles, CaI grew up hearing this song played so much on the radio. It really takes me back.
  • Brian from Boston, MaAH yes the irony. Jimmy longs for Monday while the rest of us dred it. Good point I never thought of it like that.
  • Ryan from Anahola, HiHe's looking forward to Monday for Labour Day. Der!
  • Tim Auten from Detroit, MiThe music video for this song was filmed by his wife when Buffett didn't have a whole lot of money.
  • Freddy from Margaritaville, BermudaEven aside from the line about "remember that night in Montana," he sings "I hope you're enjoyin' the scenery, I know that it's pretty up there. We can go hikin' on Tuesday, with you I'd walk anywhere". I'm convinced he's referring to Glacier National Park. Has to be.
  • Michael from San Diego, CaAnother "parrot-head" checking in here! This is a sweet, simple love song that accurately describes how anyone feels when their chosen profession often takes them away from the people they love.
  • Keith from San Francisco, CaThis was the first Jimmy Buffet song I ever heard (I think it was early 1975), and i am still a "parrot head" to this day
