The downside to Jimmy Buffett's musical lifestyle is the time he has to spend away from his family. He wrote this song for his future wife, Jane, who he was missing while on tour. When he sings the first line, "Headed out to San Francisco for the Labor Day weekend show," he's talking about a specific concert in 1973.
The single version of the song replaces the third line, "I've got my Hush Puppies on," with "I've got my hiking shoes on." Some broadcast outlets, including the BBC, would not play songs with brand names in the lyrics, something that forced an edit on the Kinks song "Lola."

A bit of irony in this song is that Buffett is looking forward to Monday so he can be with the one he loves, but for most of his audience, Monday is the dreaded day when the weekend ends and they have to go back to work.
Until "Margaritaville" came along a few years later and peaked at #8, this was Buffett's highest-charting entry on the Hot 100.
Jane Slagsvol, a model and University of South Carolina student, was on spring break in Key West when she met Buffett in a phone booth outside of the Chart Room Bar in 1972. The following year, a smitten Buffett wrote the song about her and, in 1977, they got married. Jane also starred in the music video, which features the couple on a picnic outing.
Buffett didn't have a budget for the video so Jane went without pay and he used his real truck (which was later impounded and crushed at a junk yard) and boat in the clip. "There wasn't really much need in scripting this," he said of the video. "This was where I lived, the people I lived with, and the girl who I wrote 'Come Monday' about."

What I mean by this is that he's the type of guy who'll play a concert and then have drinks with the audience after the show which he is known to do when he gives concerts in his homeland of Key West, Florida. His songs are all relatable because the topics are all something that the majority who listen to them have, at one time or another, thought about themselves. Come Monday is a perfect example of this.
