Songfacts®:

  • This song is a step up from the famous "One Note Samba" because the opening lines are a two-note melody. The music was composed by Walter Donaldson, and the lyrics were written by Gus Kahn.

According to Don Tyler in Hit Songs 1900-1955: American Popular Music of the Pre-Rock Era, it appeared (first) in The Passing Show Of 1922 and also featured in the 1945 film The Dolly Sisters, and the 1948 film April Showers.
  • The original sheet music was published by Jerome H. Remick, which features on its front cover Ben Bernie and his Orchestra. The most popular early recording was by the comedy duo Van and Schenk, but it has long become a standard, being covered by artists as diverse as Al Jolson, Judy Garland, Dean Martin, and Bill Haley.

Somebody at Remick obviously slipped up, because when the copyright expired on the original lyrics, it was not renewed, and they are now in the public domain. >>>
