Songfacts®:

  • This song was written about Clapton's daughters Julie, Ellie and Sophie, and the joy they bring him. He had the girls with Melia McEnery, who Eric married in 2002 when he was 54 (she was 23). Clapton also has a daughter named Ruth who was grown when he wrote the song.
  • The Road To Escondido started out as an Eric Clapton solo album, with Cale assisting with music and production. As the project went on, it became a collaborative effort and Cale ended up getting top billing. Cale was a big influence on Clapton, whose hits "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" were written by the Oklahoma guitarist. "Three Little Girls" was one of just two songs Clapton wrote for the album; most of the others were written by Cale.
