Songfacts®:

  • Fifty years after Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted of murdering two people in an armed robbery in Massachusetts, their case was still a hot topic as they were the subject of a 1971 biopic called Sacco & Vanzetti. Many believed the pair were wrongly accused, persecuted because they were anarchists and Italian immigrants. That's the picture painted in the film, which has a soundtrack by Joan Baez. "The Ballad Of Sacco And Vanzetti Part 3" is written as a letter to his son from Nicola Sacco as the father was about to be sent to the electric chair in 1927.
  • Baez performed this song and wrote the lyric; the music was composed by Ennio Morricone, who was best known for his Westerns.
