Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from Divers takes its title from an area of land on Manhattan Island where the Native American people known as the Lenape once settled before the Europeans colonized the area. It is located where the famous New York City artist enclave Greenwich Village can now be found.
  • The video was shot by Paul Thomas Anderson and finds Newsom wandering through the Greenwich Village streets. Anderson directed Newsom in the 2014 movie Inherent Vice.
  • The song was written by Newsom very quickly. She told Uncut: "There was a feverish process of conflation that happened where different objects, events, monuments, quotes and ideas mashed together in my mind, made sense to me."
