Songfacts®:

  • Rickie Lee Jones took us to Coolsville and Jimmy Buffett to Margaritaville, but Joe Nichols introduced us to Brokenheartsville, a sad and lonely place to wallow in heartache when the girl takes off with another guy.

Nichols delivers the song with wink - it goes down a lot easier than, say, a Hank Williams heartbreaker. He often puts a little humor in his songs, as he does here:

Here's to the past they can kiss my glass
I hope she's happy with him
  • The guy who steals his girl is a devil in a Cadillac Coup de Ville. Nichols mentioned this particular car in two of his later songs:

    "I'll Wait for You" (2005):
Now he's on his cell phone in a Coupe de Ville

    "Size Matters (Someday)" (2006)
A mile long tree-lined driveway for her big ol' Coupe de Ville

Nichols says it's not intentional - "Coupe de Ville" just sings well.
  • "Brokenheartsville" was Nichols' first #1 single on the Billboard Country chart, as well as the first chart-topper for Universal South Records. After moving to Nashville in 1996, he released an album on an independent label that went nowhere. It took him another five years, but he finally got another record deal in 2001 and released his second album, Man With A Memory, a year later. His first single from the album was "The Impossible," which was followed by "Brokenheartsville." He spent much of 2003 touring with Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn, and collecting flowers, including New Artist Of The Year at the CMAs.
  • Four songwriters collaborated to write this song: Donny Kees, Blake Mevis, Randy Boudreaux and Clint Daniels. Nichols says it's his favorite of the songs he recorded but didn't write.
  • "Brokenheartsville" became a fan favorite and has stuck around in Nichols' setlists. Along with "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off," it's a song he plays at just about every show.
