Songfacts®:

  • Penned by New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym of "Naomi Neville," this song was originally recorded by former Meters vocalist Art Neville and Louisiana rock band The Uniques in the mid-1960s.
  • In 1976 former Uniques vocalist Joe Stampley covered this as a two-step tune. His new version topped the country chart for a single week. Toussaint commented on writing a #1 country hit: "I came up loving those saloon type of tinkling pianos... There was a lot of hillbilly music on the radio in my early days. More hillbilly than R&B."
  • Jazz singer John Boutte also recorded the song and he performed it at Alan Toussaint's memorial.
