Songfacts®:

  • Joel Corry wrote this song during the summer of 2019. The DJ explained to Official Charts that he came up with the tune in the studio. He played it to the punters during his next club set to see how it went down, then returned to his studio and tweaked it again and again until it was "perfect for how it should feel in a club."

Corry added that by the end of the production, "Lonely" was "on something like Version 30."
  • The song features vocals by teenage singer Harlee, who also penned the lyrics.
  • While Corry's previous single, "Sorry," recounts a relationship ending badly, "Lonely"' is about getting over that breakup. Said Corry:

"Harlee has done a great job with the lyrics in 'Lonely' because I think a lot of people can relate to that situation. It almost feels like a progression from 'Sorry' because the lyrics in that song suggest a breakup situation, maybe some cheating has gone on, while 'Lonely' sounds like the next chapter in that story - that the person wants to get back together just because they're feeling lonely."
