  • Whoa! Joey Lawrence had a hit single? He sure did.

Lawrence was 16 at the time, starring on the sitcom Blossom as Joey Russo, sister of Blossom, played by Mayim Bialik. He had a following of teenage girls and a fair amount of musical talent, so MCA gave him a record deal.

"Nothin' My Love Can't Fix" was his first single, a pop song with hip-hop-style production and a lyric straight from the teen idol playbook, with Lawrence singing about how love (his in particular) will make everything better.
  • The most memorable section of this song is Lawrence's rap, which comes at the end, not in the bridge where rap interludes were typically inserted. You won't be surprised to learn that he wrote this part himself. After an unremarkable start ("I love you in every way..."), Lawrence gets his rhyme on:

That we were meant girl me and you
But lately you been acting like I smell like a zoo
    Philly zoo to be exact
And hey, Philly's my origin as a matter of fact

This non-sequitur, unintentionally hilarious style was totally on brand and typical of what his Blossom character might come up with.
  • Joey Lawrence wrote "Nothin' My Love Can't Fix" with the songwriters Alex Forbes and Eric Beall. Forbes, who co-wrote the Taylor Dayne hit "Don't Rush Me," didn't own a TV and knew little about Lawrence when a music publisher set up a writing session in Los Angeles.

"I got out there, and he and his family are very showbiz-oriented," she said on the Songfacts Podcast. "We sat in a room and we wrote several songs, and we got that one. We thought that the verse was really good but we could not get the chorus. We just kept trying different things, like throwing spaghetti against the wall, and finally I had to fly home. So I came home from LA and I thought my friend Eric Beall would be a great person to bring in because he had another perspective. So we completed the song together and everybody was happy with it."
  • The lively music video, replete with stylish young people, debuted before an episode of Blossom, seen by approximately 12 million viewers.
  • "Nothin' My Love Can't Fix" got enough airplay on MTV and Pop radio to reach #19 in America. Lawrence followed it up with the single "Stay Forever," which went to #52, his last charting single. He released another album in 1997 called Soulmates and issued a few singles in the ensuing decades, when he made a much bigger impact as an actor and reality TV star.

  • King from AzWho is the Singer on the Chorus? The album does not credit her. Genius is usually good and crediting uncredited artist contributions to songs, but they have nothing listed either. I have wondered this for years. Anyone know?
