Songfacts®:

  • John Legend comforts his lover on this Darkness and Light track, assuring her with his help she can fight the nightmare of this world. He tells her that they can make it through together and survive.

    The world is a nightmare
    Wake up and stay here
Let me be on your side
    We'll make this our kingdom
Somewhere where good love conquers and not divide

Legend told The Sun: "I think the whole album is about how purist love can withstand the darkness and trouble that is around us."
  • The video, directed by Washington D.C. filmmaker Cole Wiley, is about the power of love in the face of prejudice. The clip tells the story of Jamila, a Muslim woman, and Roberto, a Mexican man, who fall for each other, but face major obstacles in the form of bigotry and Islamophobia.

"'Surefire' is a song about eternal faith. Faith that love is the most powerful force in the universe," said Cole Wiley about the song and video. "Human civilization is experiencing an extraordinary moment in time. We are more capable of doing more good than ever before, but we are still mired by a myriad of systemic failures that continue to arise because of our continuing lack of empathy towards others."

  • Susanne from Nigeria I heard this song on T. V less than two weeks ago. The lyrics made so much sense to me. It felt real and made me emotional because people face the story in that song everyday in their relationships. I belive love is a very powerful force and in the end, it'll always win!
  • Shine from PakistanI'm a Muslim girl. Fell in love with an American Catholic man. But our obstacles are real big. We are really far from each other. His family is not letting him convert into Muslim. From a couple of days we are not talking with each other just to forget each other. He used to give me hope by playing this song to me. I really love him. I can't forget him. This is just a song but I'm facing this thing in reality. It's breaking me and him everyday.
