Wonder Woman

Songfacts®:

  • In this song, John Legend returns to a topic that's dear to his heart: his wife, Chrissy Teigen. He's written many songs about her over the years, most famously "All Of Me," released in 2013, the year they got married. By 2022 the couple had two children together and were long past their honeymoon period, but Legend loved her more than ever. In this song, he explains why: She's always there to lift him up.
  • The title has a double meaning. Teigen makes Legend wonder how she does it, but she's also his superhero, akin to Wonder Woman. No word on if she ever needs to use the Lasso Of Truth on him.
  • The music video stars Legend and his family and was shot in Italy, where he and Teigen got married. The song and video were released on September 14, 2022, the ninth anniversary of their wedding. Nabil Elderkin, who also made the "All Of Me" video, was the director.

Unlike many heartthrob singers, Legend stopped playing the leading man in his videos unless Teigen could play his love interest. Back when they were dating in 2009, she had a "meltdown" watching him shoot the video for "Green Light," where other women vie for his affections.
  • The credits on "Wonder Woman" include Ryan Tedder, the OneRepublic frontman who was executive producer on the Legend album, and also the members of the pop band Before You Exit. The legendary soul singer Curtis Mayfield also gets a credit, indicating that one of his songs was sampled or interpolated in some way. Our guess is that "Wonder Woman" borrows enough of the melody from "People Get Ready," Mayfield's song with his group The Impressions, to warrant a credit.
