Songfacts®:

  • Matching the rest of the Plastic Ono Band album, this is a stark and hollow track where John Lennon sings about the importance of love, a common theme in his songwriting.
  • Phil Spector co-produced the album along with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and played the piano on this track, which is the only instrumentation.
  • Barbra Streisand recorded this, along with "Mother," on her 1971 pop album Barbra Joan Streisand.

  • AnonymousSad, beautiful, moving, emotional, tragic, lovely, tearful, anger, deep, light, light & bright, dark & grey, happy, everything that John Lennon brought to this world & left it much too soon. He deserved more, & we needed more of him..
  • Rick Margin from Brick,njLennon recorded this with Phil Spector playing the piano. The song was originally composed as a simple acoustic vibe, but morphed into a more piano-driven track in the studio. On Take 12, Lennon asked Spector to accompany him on the piano (while John continued to play the acoustic). It was completed on Take 25.

  • Malicious Matt from SquatneyJust another honest John Lennon song. I recall a night where I was in a (lets call it "chemically enhanced") love buzz and I felt that this song was where its at!
  • Sara from Silver Spring, MdKenny Loggins did a beautiful cover of this on his popular "Return to Pooh Corner" CD. Did Lennon write this for one of of his kids.
Famed jazz pianist David Benoit appears on the Loggins version.
  • Sarah from Kennewick, WaDoes anyone here know how to play this on the piano?
