Songfacts®:

  • This folk-based acoustic love song is sung from the perspective of a man spending his final days with his dying wife. Asked by Billboard magazine if he thinks about mortality more now that he is in his 60s, Mellencamp replied: "I've always thought about it. I think most people do."

"I've got teenage boys who talk to me about it; I've got girls in their 30s who talk about it," he added. "It's in the back of people's minds that 'Hey, I'm not going to be here forever.'"
  • The Plain Spoken album cover is a photo of Mellencamp that was shot by his then-girlfriend, the actress Meg Ryan. She snapped it on her iPhone when the pair were in Greece visiting the singer's son.
