Songfacts®:

  • This Freedom's Road hidden track follows several minutes of silence.
  • The country band Little Big Town provided background vocals on eight songs on the album, but decided not to sing on this obvious swipe at President Bush for the Iraq War. "They were afraid that country radio would hear about it, and that would be the end of it for them," Mellencamp recalled.

The chorus was actually sung by guitarist Mike Wanchic, Mellencamp's then-wife Elaine, and anyone else who was in the room at the time.
