Songfacts®:

  • How many summers still remain?
How many days are lost in vain?
Who's counting out these last remaining years?
How many minutes do we have here?

"Wasted Days" is a hearty acoustic stroll that finds John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen teaming up for the first time. The veteran purveyors of blue-collar rock sing about making the most of the time they still have on this planet.
  • John Mellencamp released "Wasted Days" on September 29, 2021. The ballad is one of three songs he recorded for his 25th album featuring Springsteen.
  • John Mellencamp did all the writing and production on "Wasted Days." Springsteen played no role in the song's creation.
  • The song features Mellencamp's band and Springsteen on electric guitar. Accordion player Troye Kinnett and violinist Miriam Sturm also play on the track.
  • Thom Zimny, a frequent collaborator of Springsteen's, shot the video in New Jersey in early September 2021. It finds The Boss and Mellencamp sitting in a living room playing cards, and later playing on an outdoor stage.
