Songfacts®:

  • In this song, John Mellencamp offers his observations on women, a subject he knows quite well. "Women seem to like me," is the opening line, which is certainly true. He then goes on to explain how he gets along so well with them until it's time for commitment.

At the time, he was midway through his marriage to the modeling star Elaine Irwin, his third wife. Mellencamp writes in character, but this guy has a lot of himself in it. He's made it clear that he has tremendous respect for women, but can be a terrible partner.
  • The Kinks' frontman Ray Davies provided the impetus for this song: "That's just me plagiarizing Ray Davies," Mellencamp admitted in the liner notes for the On The Rural Route 7609 box set. "Don't forget, I did something like 150 shows with the Kinks over a three-year period, and everything I've learned about being a live performer is from Ray."
  • "Women Seem" is a track from Mellencamp's 17th album, Cuttin' Heads, his first of the '00s. By this time, his music was more introspective and less likely to produce a hit. The only single from the album was "Peaceful World," a duet with India.Arie.
