Songfacts®:

  • Running to 5 minutes 31 seconds, and co-written with bass player Bob Marshall, this early John Miles classic sounds like it could have been inspired by a science fiction novel or comic strip hero, alas, it had a far more prosaic genesis. As Stephen Carson of the John Miles website explained:

"As you know Bob wrote the lyrics. I am aware that the character could have been named something else. In an interview it was noted that for the [rhythm] of the song the sound they were looking for was met by Shredded Wheat, Tin of Paint but that Tarragon sounded good before it was altered to Zaragon."

Hmm, shades of McCartney and his scrambled eggs? >>
