Songfacts®:

  • This song is about a girl who will cheat on her man with impunity, since she knows he'll always be there. In our interview with John Parr, he talked about writing the song. "I love wordplay," he said. "English grammar. I before E except after C. I thought of a fun twist on a lovers' relationship where the girl always puts me first until she realizes she has me. 'I Before he except after she knows I'll always be there.'"
  • This appeared on Parr's debut album in 1984, but it didn't chart until late in 1985 after he hit #1 with "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)," which he recorded for the movie.
