Songfacts®:

  • Among the Stars is a posthumous studio album from Johnny Cash, comprising lost recordings from 1980s sessions, which were discovered by Cash's son John Carter Cash in 2012. This song is a duet with June Carter Cash. John Carter Cash told NME: "One of the best duets my parents sang together. Dad was deep in love with his wife, and there's a great energy to this song."
  • The song was originally recorded by Carlene Carter as a duet with Dave Edmunds of the British rock band Rockpile. Released as a single in 1980, it peaked at #76 on the country chart. John Carter Cash told Uncut magazine: "My sister Carlene came in to sing harmony on it. Carlene sang it with Dave Edmunds back in the '70s, that's where my dad learned the song, so it was really meaningful to have her there."
  • Carter Cash recalled to The Guardian: "I remember my parents singing for years on the stage in the early 1980s. They loved this song. To me, it is as powerful as 'Jackson.'"
