The Roving Irish Boy

Album: Songs of Ireland (1855)

Songfacts®:

  • According to Harry Bradshaw in his short biographical essay about the man known as the Singing Irish Clown, "The Roving Irish Boy" was one of the first songs Johnny Patterson ever wrote. It is clearly autobiographical because having joined the army aged only 14 and spending some five years serving the Queen, he joined the circus.

During his career he traveled to Liverpool where he married a fellow performer, and spent some time in America where he won fame as well as fortune before returning to the Emerald Isle. >>
