Songfacts®:

  • Written in 3/4 time, this nostalgic composition by Johnny Patterson is based on his early life. Patterson was born at Feakle, County Clare in 1840, and by the time he was three, both his parents were dead, so he was raised by his uncle in the town of Ennis until he enlisted in the army at just 14.

The song refers to a meeting place for the youngsters of the town, where doubtless he hung out.

"The Stone Outside Dan Murphy's Door" has been fairly widely recorded, including by the Dubliners. >>>
