Songfacts®:

  • "Sanctuary" is a lovelorn ballad in which Joji pours his heart out to a girl.

Go ahead and bark after dark
Fallen star, I'm your one call away
    Motel halls, neon walls
When night falls, I am your escape

Joji is yearning for the two of them to be together, urging her to let him be her sanctuary.
  • Produced by Justin Raisen, the instrumentation features ambient synths and a minimalist beat. The Miami native has also worked with Charli XCX ("London Queen"), Kim Gordon ("Murdered Out") and Lizzo ("Truth Hurts").
  • The song's music video pays homage to sci-fi movies and TV shows such as Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. Envisioned by Joji, it was filmed by Eoin Glaister, a UK-based director who has previously worked with Glass Animals ("Pork Soda" "Agnes") and Catfish and the Bottlemen ("Fallout").
