Oh Wot A Big One!

Songfacts®:

  • This is a slightly risqué song after the fashion of "Oh What A Beauty!". It was written by Jonathan Hodge for the Academy Award winning animated film Great; Hodge also performed it (with some assistance from an animated Queen Victoria), and no, it is not about a marrow but the SS Great Eastern, which was designed by the legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59). At the time, it was by far the largest ship ever built, and would have been able to circumnavigate the globe carrying four thousand passengers without refueling. Alas, it was damaged by an explosion on its maiden voyage, although it was not broken up until 1889. Brunel himself died shortly after the ship was launched.
  • "Oh Wot A Big One!" was released by Hodge as a single on the Polydor label in August 1976 backed by "G.W.R."; it includes a few bars of the "Sailor's Hornpipe" to stress the nautical theme. >>>
