Songfacts®:

  • Originally a minute-long guitar-powered instrumental debuted by Radiohead during a May 6, 2006 show in Copenhagen, Jonny Greenwood reworked the tune for the 2014 Paul Thomas Anderson movie Inherent Vice. The Radiohead guitarist was given help for the new arrangement by former Supergrass members Gaz Coombes and Dany Goffey. Both Radiohead and Supergrass were formed in Oxford.
  • Singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom provides spoken-word vocals over the instrumentation. The folk harpist also co-stars as Sortilège in the movie.
  • Jonny Greenwood composed much of the music for Inherent Vice, recording his score with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. The Radiohead guitarist has twice before scored films for Paul Thomas Anderson, composing the music for 2007's There Will Be Blood and 2012's The Master.
