Songfacts®:

  • This was co-written and produced by Robbie Nevil, who had an international hit with his own recording "C'est La Vie" back in 1986. Nevil co-wrote several songs for both the High School Musical and Hannah Montana soundtracks. The song is about conquering the challenges in life by taking them "one step at a time."
  • Nevil, who wrote this with singer-songwriter Lauren Evans, told Songfacts how the song came about: "The track had been sent to us. It was a Danish track from my friend Mick Cutfather and JJ (Jonas Jeberg), his partner at the time. Lauren and I had gotten a call to try to write something for the winner of American Idol, and Jordin Sparks had just won. We were just thinking about what being in that position was like and wanting to get your shot.

At the beginning of the track there were sounds like footsteps, and that kind of led us to the 'One Step At A Time' idea." (Read our full Robbie Nevil interview.)
