Songfacts®:

  • Josh Doyle is a British-American songwriter and musician who achieved chart success in the UK in the early 2000s as the lead singer and guitarist for British guitar-pop band Dum Dums. After the band broke up in 2001 Josh resurfaced in Nashville in 2004 and released an independent EP The End Of Fears, which revealed a new folktronica sound. This is a track from his second EP, Values and Virtues.
  • Josh spoke to us about this track. He said: "The first line of this song that has been generally thought of as a love song coming out of hard times was actually inspired by a random internet conversation with a persecuted Chinese gay man. 'I cried myself to sleep wishing I was someone else' came directly from an internet conversation on the IMVU website. We were chatting and the conversation went to how he loved someone at his work but because in China homosexuality is strictly forbidden, he felt tormented and would cry himself to sleep wishing he was anyone but him.

Also the subject of 'Concrete Moon' who loves me when I don't deserve it is not actually a lover, it's my little daughter, the song is really about trying to provide for your kids in the middle of life's struggles…"
