Songfacts®:

  • "Sawgrass" is the opening track on Josh Ritter's 2023 album Spectral Lines, which is dedicated to the memory of his mother. The spoken-word piece is about grief and loss, but also about the hope that they will be reunited one day.
  • Ritter thinks of "Sawgrass" as the album's thesis statement and statement of artistic intent. "Spectral Lines is an album that exposes a search for human connection," he told UK newspaper The Sun. "With others, with a divine, with anyone and anything that might understand us. My mother devoted her life to wonder, and at the heart of wonder is connection."
  • Sam Kassirer, a composer, record producer, pianist, and member of Josh Ritter's Royal City Band, produced Spectral Lines. Kassirer splits his time between his home in Boston and an old farmhouse in Maine, which he has transformed into a retreat-style recording studio.
