Songfacts®:

  • Here, Josh Thompson pays tribute to his hard-working, loving, always-with-a-beer father for whom "one too many was one he never had."

"It's the first song I wrote in my house here in Nashville, and it takes me back to growing up with my parents," Thompson told Rolling Stone Country of the song. "That's what makes it special to me."
  • This is one of many ale-themed songs in Thompson's resume: The Wisconsin native's first big release was 2010's "Beer on the Table." Three years later, Thompson's first single with Show Dog-Universal Music was "Cold Beer with Your Name On It" and in 2016 he helped pen Jason Aldean's #1 hit, "Any Ol' Barstool."
