Songfacts®:

  • Released nearly two years to the day after his tragic death from an overdose, Fighting Demons hinges on Juice WRLD's ongoing struggles with substance abuse. The opening track, "Burn," sets the album's melancholic mood.

Hands up in the fire, burn, burn, burn, burn
I pray to God for some water to wash down these Percs
I been cursed since birth, guess I never learn

Juice used pills and codeine to numb his intense feelings of anxiety. The rapper knew his drug habit was playing with fire, and it ultimately cost him his life.
  • During the second verse, Juice recalls a dream he had when he was with his girlfriend Ally Lotti in Germany.

I fell asleep too deep that one time
Woke up to your cry, girl, I'm fine
    But I lied
Had a dream, I wasn't gon' wake up this time

Lotti recalled in an Instagram Live post she used to weep listening to this song even before he died because of how personal it is. "I was trying to wake him up because he would have jolts and s--t in his dream," she wrote, "and I was like, 'Get the f--k up,' like screaming, and my scream woke him up, but he told me later he never woke up from the dream, and that's why he made the song."
  • Metro Boomin created the string-driven beat. Best known for his recordings with Atlanta rappers such as Future and 21 Savage, this is his first production on a Juice WRLD song.
