Songfacts®:

  • This song finds Juice WRLD honoring both Lil Peep, who died of a drug overdose in November 2017, and XXXTentacion, who was shot dead in June 2018. The Chicago rapper expresses his feelings about their tragic losses and the way it has made hum question his own rising fame.

They tell me I'ma be a legend
I don't want that title now
'Cause all the legends seem to die out
What the f--- is this 'bout?

Having scored his first big hit with "Lucid Dreams (Forget Me)" shortly before the release of this song, Juice is struggling with the potentially fatal consequences of becoming a legend himself.
  • "Legends" was produced by New York-based duo Take A Daytrip. "I think that was like the first or second beat we played and he immediately just said, 'Load it up,'" Take a Daytrip's Denzel Baptiste told Genius. "This is like, five minutes after meeting him. He just goes in the booth and kind of just freestyles this entire song. And that's like the first song we did with him."
  • Juice WRLD died on December 8, 2019, one week after turning 21. He eerily predicted the age of his passing on this song when reflecting on the "27 Club," the group of famous artists who died at the age of 27.

    What's the 27 Clu-u-u-ub?
We ain't making it past 21
  • This was the first Hot 100 hit produced by Take A Daytrip. They became the creative geniuses behind smash hits by the likes of Sheck Wes ("Mo Bamba"), Travis Scott and Kid Cudi ("The Scotts") and Lil Nas X ("MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)," "Industry Baby").
