Songfacts®:

  • Julia Jacklin wrote this song on the road while spending hours staring out of the tour van windows. The song is a demand from the singer for psychological and physical space in a notoriously claustrophobic touring environment. Jacklin told DIY magazine she was feeling "like the walls were closing in a little" and was unable to recall the last time she'd had a moment to herself.
  • Jacklin told Consequence of Sound the song was inspired by the people she meets at her shows who like to touch her. She'd come to the realization that it's okay to set boundaries:

"You want to give people what they want, you want to be the nicest person to people because there's always that fear of letting someone leave a show without having a good idea of who you are," Jacklin explained. "But then you start to realize that you're already giving so much on stage every night, and that you can't give any more than that."
