Songfacts®:

  • Julia Jacklin grew up Catholic, and here she reflects on the influence her religious upbringing had on her sexuality. She describes what she was taught when she was young.

Ever since I was 13, I've been pulled in every direction
Such a good student, of all that conflicting advice
  • During the soulful, uplifting chorus, Jacklin gives her past self some advice.

    You are brave
A little leaf catching a wave
Strong but willing to be saved
    Ignore the tenderness you crave

"I was trying to reconcile with a lot of younger sexual experiences and approach them with a lot more understanding and care for myself than I think I used to feel," she told Uncut magazine. "I was trying to reach back and be like, 'You know, you weren't in the wrong in any way.'"
  • "Ignore Tenderness" is the third track on Pre Pleasure. Jacklin recorded the album at Montreal's Mixart Studios and Planet Studios with co-producer Marcus Paquin. Montreal-born singer-songwriter Marcus Paquin has engineered albums for Arcade Fire (The Suburbs) and The National (Trouble Will Find Me). He also produced The Weather Station's Ignorance album and recruited that band's bassist Ben Whiteley and guitarist Will Kidman to play on Pre Pleasure.
