Songfacts®:

  • Jump, Little Children frontman Jay Clifford wrote this emotional tune about his ailing father-in-law, who got a chance to feel young again just before he died. Clifford told Songfacts in a 2022 interview: "The two weeks before he passed away, he spent most of his time singing. He loved Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Dolly Parton, so he would sing all these old country songs. He would sing hymns and Christmas carols from his childhood. Hearing him sing in the background, it was like, 'Oh, he's feeling what it feels like to be young again.' He has that last chance to feel that way. It's an amazing thing that even in the face of the end, he was able to find a real sense of joy and boyhood."
  • This features guest vocals from Cary Ann Hearst of the South Carolina folk duo Shovels & Rope.
  • This appears on Jump, Little Children's sixth and final studio album, Foundering. The band formed in 1991 and released their major label debut, Magazine, in 1998 via Breaking Records, an Atlantic imprint founded by Hootie & The Blowfish.
