  • Justin Bieber was raised as a Christian by his single mom Pattie and maternal grandmother, Diane. After a few years when he went off the rails, the Canadian pop star rededicated his life to God and he was baptized on January 9, 2014 by pastor Carl Lentz of the evangelical Hillsong Church, New York. Following marriage to his fellow believer, Hailey Baldwin, in the fall of 2018, Bieber has endeavored to maintain a close walk with God. Here, he describes how he feels spiritually renewed when he is with his wife.

The way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
    On God

Bieber is aware of his imperfections, but he feels stronger in his relationship with God when Hailey is with him.
  • Change the Rapper joins Bieber on the track, during which he talks about his faith in God and getting baptized.

The first step pleases the Father
Might be the hardest to take
But when you come out of the water
I'm a believer, my heart is fleshy

Chance has a similar spiritual history to Bieber; having been raised as a Christian by his grandmother, he credits his childhood sweetheart Kirsten Corley with renewing his relationship with the Lord. He got baptized just before their marriage on March 9, 2019.
  • Bieber and Chance have worked together on several previous occasions, including the Canadian's Journals track "Confident," the rapper's Coloring Book song "Juke Jam," and DJ Khaled's hits "I'm the One" and "No Brainer."
  • Justin Bieber and Chance The Rapper wrote the lyrics between them. The gospel-influenced pop track was produced by:

Mr. Franks and Tommy Brown, who are both frequent Ariana Grande collaborators. Previous tracks that they worked on together include Grande's hookup with Blackpink, "Ice Cream."

New York singer-rapper Jon Bellion, whose other credits include Maroon 5's "Memories" and Miley Cyrus' "Midnight Sky." He also had his own hit in 2016 with "All Time Low."

Jorgen Odegard, who has also worked with Imagine Dragons ("Bad Liar") and Pink ("Hurts 2B Human").
  • The Colin Tilley-directed video co-stars Ryan Destiny as Bieber's love interest. R&B singer and actress Destiny played the lead role on Lee Daniels' musical drama Star, which ran for three seasons on Fox. She previous appeared in two Big Sean clips for "Paradise" and "Single Again." Wilmer Valderrama (From Dusk till Dawn: The Series) also features as the kind soldier who offers Bieber and Destiny a ride.

Bieber explained in a behind-the-scenes film that the reasoning behind Valderrama's caring act in the clip was to hammer home the video's overarching message. "It basically shows how an act of compassion can really change the trajectory of someone's life or day. And just having empathy for people," he said. "That's our goal with this project, is just to inspire, to bring hope in this kind of uncertain, fragile time."
  • The gospel artist Kirk Franklin features during the final choir section of the track. Franklin previously linked up with Chance The Rapper for a performance of Chance's "How Great" at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
  • Colin Tilley first worked with Bieber in 2010 on his "Never Let You Go" video, and with both the Canadian pop star and Chance back in 2014 on "Confident." He explained on the behind-the-scenes film that when Bieber sent him the song, he wanted to know its meaning and what it meant to him. The singer told him its message was: "You could be having the worst day in the world but what kept me going was the love I had with my wife."
  • Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Chance the Rapper said the song is special to him because he and Justin are close friends and have a lot in common.

"We're a year apart, we got married at the same age, kind of like gone through a lot of the stuff together," he explained. "And the song was about our relationship with our wives, our relationship with our faith."
  • On December 18, 2020, Justin Bieber released a UK charity version where he joins forces with the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir. Profits from the new version, recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios, are split between NHS Charities Together (which represents over 230 NHS charities) and the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Charity.

Choir leader and physiotherapist Caroline Smith told The Sun: "We got an email asking if we would like to collaborate with Justin Bieber, as you do. It's been quite quick to put it together and we learned it virtually as we were rehearsing online."
  • In 2015, Bieber and the Choir were competitors in the battle for the UK Christmas #1. After The Biebs urged his fans to purchase the Choir's charity single "A Bridge Over You" rather than his own track "Love Yourself," the NHS singers won the race for the festive honors.
  • Bieber released "Holy" as the lead single from Justice. He told Vogue he named the record Justice "because there's so much injustice in this world and there has been since the beginning of time." He added another reason is his name, Justin, means "justice."

  • Quade from PortlandJon bellion wrote the whole song, it’s been leaked all over and me and many others heard him sing it live. He sold it to JB and that’s where his credit comes from. It’s annoying to see that he’s not getting credit for such a popular song he wrote.
