Songfacts®:

  • A "red eye" is a colloquialism for an overnight plane flight. Dating back to the 1960s, the expression refers to how the journey deprives passengers of proper sleep, leaving them with bloodshot eyes, a symptom of fatigue.

Here, Justin Bieber sings of missing his wife, Hailey, as he is working thousands of miles away. The Canadian pop star is looking forward to "hoppin' on the red-eye" so they will be reunited.
  • The roles are reversed in the second verse when Hailey flies abroad for a modeling job. She is "gone for a few days, posin' in the heat," leaving Justin with a geographical heartache.
  • Bieber created this meandering electro-R&B track for his 2020 album Changes, but it didn't make the cut. Following its appearance on episode 1 of his Seasons documentary series, the song went viral, so Justin included it as a bonus track on his European webstore alternate cover CD version of Justice. He later included it as a bonus track on Justice: The Complete edition.
  • We get to hear the demo version from around the 8:40 mark in Seasons Episode 1. It shows Justin telling Hailey: "How sick would it be if I played the drums on this," suggesting the song is incomplete.
  • UK producer TroyBoi reworked Justin's demo for Justice, cutting out the "Fly out to the East Coast, I've got to keep the lights on" part.
  • Other artists who have recorded songs titled "Red Eye" include Switchfoot, Kid Cudi, Vance Joy and Andy Grammer.
