Songfacts®:

  • This Motown-style ballad is the second single from the latter half of Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber's debut album, My World 2.0. In the song, Bieber explains that when his girl smiles, it makes him smile too.
  • Justin helped co-write the song along with August Rigo and his producers, Jerry Wonda and Arden Altino. Bieber had particularly high praise for Rigo. "I worked with August. I got him. He's a really good writer," Justin said of his friend and collaborator. "The song is amazing. We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It's really amazing."
  • Justin shared with his fans the inspiration behind the song on Twitter. "'U Smile' is one of the best songs I have ever recorded," he wrote. "It really is a throwback to the great records I listened to growing up. I wrote it for all my fans who got me here. U took me from a small town in Canada to this amazing opportunity I am living now. I am so grateful for everything and so blessed for all of your support. I wrote 'U Smile' with my friend August with that in mind. So this one is for U. Enjoy it and know that u the fans give me my strength in a lot of this."
  • The Collen Tilley directed music video is about letting fans experience the ultimate fantasy for any hard-core Justin fan - being his girlfriend. "I took the opportunity 2 make a video 4 the fans, about a fan, and how we could fall IN LOVE," Justin tweeted about the clip. "Love Grows. #LoveGrows."
  • In our interview with August Rigo, he said: "Writing that song was great. That one was one of the fastest songs I've ever written in my life. I think it took me about an hour to write because the vibe around it was so good. I wrote it with a producer, Jerry Wonda, and the vibe around it was so good that it just kind of came out."
  • This song was written for Musiq Soulchild - Rigo, Wonda and Altino put it together when they were working on sessions for his 2011 MusiqInTheMagiq album. The song wasn't right for Musiq, and eventually found its way to a kid they hadn't heard of: Justin Bieber.
