Songfacts®:

  • This carefree party song finds Justin Moore running through some of the reasons why he likes to drink alcoholic beverages.

    'Cause they're ice cold
    'Cause it's hot out
'Cause we're Jon Boat sittin' with the line out
'Cause we're a little messed up, but it's cheaper than a dang old shrink

Other reasons to raise a glass that Moore lists include a home team win (or loss), the end of a day's work, a Sunday barbecue, and toasting "the red, white and blue boys and girls overseas."
  • Moore's parents are two of his occasional drinking buddies, and the song originated from something his mom said at dinner after he'd ordered three or four drinks. He told Access this prompted his mom to ask him why he drinks so much. Moore replied:

"Hell, I don't know why I drink so much! I like drinking. If my team wins, I drink to celebrate. If my team loses, I drink 'cause I'm bummed out. If a certain song comes on, I drink."

This gave Moore the idea to write a song called "Why We Drink."
  • Justin Moore co-wrote this song with David Lee Murphy, Casey Beathard, and Jeremy Stover in the summer of 2019 at his beach house. The four penned the tune in about 25 minutes after Moore shared his "Why We Drink" idea. "I remember David [Lee Murphy] saying 'cause its Friday, cause its Monday' and knowing we had something," he recalled to American Songwriter.
  • Moore noted the song's popularity as soon as he started performing it live. "Before the pandemic hit, we were out on the road playing it, and it was just one of those songs that the crowd could sing the chorus to from the very first time they heard it," he said.
  • Cody Villalobos directed the music video, which was filmed at Moore's home in Poyen, Arkansas. Justin's mother, Charlene Moore, who inspired the song, also makes an appearance in the clip.
