Songfacts®:

  • Kaliya Ashley Ross, known professionally as Kali, is an American rapper from Roswell, Georgia, of Panamanian descent.

She started spitting rhymes when she was just 12, and you know why? She made a deal with her pops to write a dope collection of 13 songs so she could finally have her own bedroom. Talk about hustle!

Kali didn't waste any time. She finished those 13 tracks like a boss, then put six of them on CDs and hustled them like hotcakes. She hit up local barbershops and even her soccer team, getting her music out there and making a name for herself.

In November 2020, Kali blew up on TikTok with her banger "Do A Bitch." That track had everybody vibing and spreading like wildfire. She dropped her debut mixtape, This Is Why They Mad Now, the following year, which features a remix of "Do A Bitch," featuring Rico Nasty.

On March 17, 2023, Kali dropped another viral bomb on us when she released "Area Codes."
  • On this song Kali straight-up flexes about how she's got male admirers spread out across every area code in her city. They shower her with gifts, throw money her way, and show up whenever she hits them up. It's like they've become a symbol of her popularity, a testament to all the dudes she's got flocking to her.
  • Tate Kobang and YG! Beats created the killer beat. The two produced Nicki Minaj's 2021 Beam Me Up Scotty track "Fractions," while Koban also co-produced Minaj's 2023 single, "Red Ruby Da Sleeze."
  • Ludacris released his "Area Codes" in 2001, around the time Kali was born. His song has a similar theme but from a male perspective.
  • Kali released a series of remixes, each featuring a different rapper from a different area code. "I just wanted to expand 'Area Codes' and get everybody tapped into the song," she told Billboard. "It's called 'Area Codes,' so I gotta go to different area codes and see which artists are popping off and can really bring something new to the track! I did Luh Tyler, Sexyy Red, Mello Buckzz, Lil Kayla and Kenzo B, and they're all super-popping right now. They killed their verses. They definitely added to 'Area Codes' and brought their audiences in too, just like I brought my audience to theirs."
